Heat-treatable alloy 5083 is annealed at 350°C, where time and cooling rate are not critical. Stress relief is rarely needed but can be performed at around 220°C if required, with testing recommended to avoid strength loss.
Alloy 5083 is prone to exfoliation corrosion in harsh environments, but the 5083 H116 aluminum sheet is the least sensitive and passes exfoliation susceptibility tests. It is advised not to use this alloy above 65°C.
Welding 5083 H116 aluminum sheet reduces tensile and yield strength to annealed condition. The aluminum must be extremely dry and clean to avoid contamination and porosity in welds. Any flux residues from welding or brazing must be removed by hot water scrubbing.
Heat treatment generally enhances the mechanical strength of any alloy. Among non-heat-treatable alloys, 5083 H116 aluminum sheet stands out for its remarkable strength. To increase tensile strength, cold working and H-series tempering are required. Despite its high strength, using this alloy above 65°C is not recommended. Due to its resistance to marine environments, 5083 aluminum sheet is ideal for shipbuilding applications.
